Allying your business to a cause or campaign can help you hit the headlines in a way that focussing on your own products or services may not. If you get involved in political campaigning or lobbying it can add to your business credibility too. But remember to think out all the pros and cons of adopting a particular campaign or stance: anything controversial is likely to alienate some customers while attracting others. Here are some ideas for techniques to help you campaign:

Lobbying

Parliamentary questions

All Party parliamentary Group and Select Committee Enquiries

Writing to MPs

MP constituency clinics and other meetings

Polls

National advertisements

Targeting political media e.g. House Magazine

Editors get hundreds of files sent through and this will save them precious moments. Similarly, if you need to send a product shot use the file name to tell the editor what the image is and your business name. Making a journalist’s life easier helps when you next want them to cover you.

Over half of new mums would like to run their own business, and the number of mumpreneurs is growing daily. If you want to start your own home business, here are some pointers from Antonia Chitty, author of Family Friendly Working, to get you going:

Get a great business idea. If you’re not sure where to start, sign up for the Ideas and Inspirations E-course at Family Friendly Working.

List your priorities such as earning money, or finding work that lets you stay home with your children.

Write down your skills, and ask others what they think you’re good at.

Think about the hours you can devote to working. Be realistic if you plan to work around the kids, as they may not understand “mummy’s working”.

Research the market for your business. Will people buy your product or service? Is it unique enough to be appealing?

Pop into a local Enterprise Agency for advice. The Inland Revenue can also send an advisor to your house.

Go to The Mumpreneur Guide for a free start up e-course to help you get your business going.

Prepare a business plan. Set out aims and objectives, and the steps to take to achieve your goals. There is a free business plan guide to download at www.prbasics.co.uk

Work out how you will promote and market your business. Visit www.PRBasics.co.uk for a free promotion plan and lots of PR ideas and resources.

Good luck with your new enterprise.

Antonia Chitty struggled with post natal depression after the birth of her daughter. She thought returning to work might make her feel back in control, but she found she didn’t see enough of Daisy. After 9 months and a chat with a life coach she took the plunge and set up her own business, ACPR, helping mumpreneurs learn to promote their business. Antonia has now written a book which makes it even easier for every businessmum to get the word out about their enterprise.

A guide to Promoting Your Business is created with busy business parents in mind, and can be worked through in short sections when you have a few minutes – perfect if you are running a business round the kids. Clear explanations, examples and exercises make it easy to pick up the essentials skills to boost your business.

Lizzie Vann MBE, Founder of Organix Brands Ltd, says, “This workbook is an excellent and concise guide to help anyone who is starting up a new business – it gives some excellent advice, guidance and knowledge for new business owners and entrepreneurs.”

A guide to Promoting Your Business takes you step by step through working out what is unique and special about your business, and helps you learn about writing and sending your own press releases. Packed with low cost techniques for getting your business noticed, just follow the steps in the book to reach more customers.
“This book has helped me make more sense of the PR jungle than ever before,” says Bex Smith, an experienced business-mum and reflexologist, www.time4reflexion.co.uk

There is a website, prbasics.co.uk, to accompany the book, with lots of free resources and essential links. Visit the site to download a template to help you plan your business promotion, a template for writing your own press releases, and more. You can also see extracts from the workbook, and submit your own suggestions for useful resources. And www.themumpreneurguide.co.uk offers more useful business advice from Antonia, plus a free e-course for mums wanting to start a business.

The book is available from www.prbasics.co.uk, www.acpr.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk and can be ordered from any bookshop if you quote ISBN 978-0955534508
