I love writing posts for my blogs and also write on behalf of a couple of other businesses, but a new survey suggests that more than 70% of small businesses say they don’t have time to keep their blogs up to date. It is easy to see how hard it is for a small business owner to take on thie additional task. As well as dealing with sales, you need to continually come up with new ideas for the blog. However it is well worth it as a blog can really raise your site’s profile.

The survey of 125 small business owners published today by SEO copywriting company Write My Site shows that 62% of respondents set up a blog in the hope that it would increase traffic to their websites. Nevertheless, only 29% are managing to populate them between one and three times each month, with the remaining 71% admitting that their blogs have fallen by the wayside.

Emily Hill, Write My Site’s MD, says: “When a blog hasn’t been updated for several weeks or months it looks unprofessional – people tend to be relieved to learn they can offload the time-consuming task of keeping their blogs up-to-date.”

If blogs are such a hassle to maintain, why bother having them at all? In a word: traffic. Google and the other search engines pay great attention to sites that regularly add original – and relevant – content. Digital marketing industry body Econsultancy has used its own blog to urge small businesses to take advantage of this simple SEO strategy: “We are big believers in quality content. Original content. Google loves it too. And so do many SEO experts – the general advice these days is to create subject-specific content on your website, and to categorise and label that content in a way that will deliver a boost to your keyword strategy. Blogs are good for this.”

Hill supports this view: “We have seen for ourselves the benefits of a well-written blog: our own traffic has increased by more than 200% since we bolted a blog onto our website,” she says. “Better still, the traffic is completely targeted: all of our increased hits and enquiries are from people who have found Write My Site by running searches on our keywords.”

In the last few days my in box has been inundated with emails linking to articles on Swine Flu. OK, there is some legitimate business planning going in in case of pandemic, but the press release highlighting that you should buy brand xxx soap, to comply with Government suggestions on hand washing was a bit much. Having had some time to sit back during maternity leave and look at all the ways people are working online to draw more visitors to their websites, I think it may be time to say ‘Enough!’ If you have a site that is not genuinely going to help people deal with flu, don’t look for a tenuous link in the hope that people will find you on Google.

It is harder to stick with writing a blog than you might think. As part of a busy day, your blog can be seen as an ‘extra’ – but it can be a fun way to really improve your search engine results. I’ve seen visitors more than double since starting to blog on www.acpr.co.uk and www.familyfriendlyworking.co.uk. I really enjoy tracking down news for women in business and mumpreneurs, and have started getting a steady flow of useful books to review on the sites too. So, if you have a dormant blog, think up some themes and ideas to make sure you are posting every day or two. Sign up for some relevant press release feeds to give you some new ideas. And ask some guest bloggers in to help you keep things going.

I’ve been using a site called Website Grader in the last few days. It will appeal to you if you know a few things about SEO but are unsure what to do next to improve your site rating. Website Grader looks at everything from your tags to your sites listings on directories, and makes suggestions about blogs and contact forms. It has helped me pick up a few things that were wrong on my site and hopefully improve the way www.acpr.co.uk is picked up on search engines. I’m also using it for www.familyfriendlyworking.co.uk, where I have started a new blog about flexible work and mumpreneurs. Hope you find it useful too.

I was feeling uninspired about what to blog, but got a nice boost this afternoon when I picked up a copy of Junior Pregnancy & Baby magazine, which contained an article about starting a craft business. I spoke to the journalist a couple of months ago and she mentioned my book, A Guide to Promoting Your Business, in the article alongside some PR tips which you can read below:

I went on a short Wordpress course today at the eBiz centre in Hastings. Wordpress seems straightforward, and I could probably have managed without the course, but it was fun to do and I met some good people and made a useful contact. I now have to decide about how to attach it to my site(s). I have three sites running currently, ACPR, PRBasics and Family Friendly Working. ACPR is simply the site for my PR Business, and the other two are the sites for my latest books. I have one further site which is deeply out of date, and I’m too embarassed to link to. I think in reality I need to update that and add the blog to it, and use it as a way of bringing the other three sites together. I could also do with creating a website for my Dad’s Glass Book, and another for a very sector specifc area of PR training which I don’t mention anywhere online yet!

Something to think about over Christmas perhaps!

It is in a lovely format – a small hardback, about 6″ by 4″ – and written in short snappy sections which makes it easy to read. It is inspiring and motivating, and reminded me how to sharpen up my pitches. However, the shortness of some of the sections can make some of the content seem a little disjointed. It can be frustrating just when you get interested to find that the book has moved onto the next topic. Jones is at her best in some of the longer sections. The chapter on Writing for the Internet is one of the best, and probably worth buying the book for by itself. I’m finally clear on exactly why blogging is such a good tool to boost your website’s profile, and what a Permalink is. Linda Jones is a prolific blogger, and this shows in this section of the book. Every time you add something like a blog, or set up a profile on a new networking site, you will definitely reach new people. Actively networking on Facebook by joining relevant groups, or linking up with likeminded folk on MySpace will put your business name in front of people who haven’t come across it before. But there’s not guarantee that this will lead to sales. The users of many social networking sites tend to be in the 16 to 30 age group. Michelle says, “I’ve had plenty of hits from Facebook but again no sales. I am yet to see if it is worth while or not. I’ve had more sales from forums such as those aimed at Childminders.”
